Communication

On our 5th Sunday in December, we combined with the Priesthood brethren for a great lesson on Communication given by Thom Kinghorn. Here are my notes from the meeting.

Scriptures to look up with examples of Communication:

3 Nephi 27:29
3 Nephi 11:3-6
James 1:19
Mosiah 27:4
D&C 38:24-25
John 8:2-11
Matt 5:25
1 Nephi 5:2-6
Alma 60-61

TIPS FOR IMPROVING COMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES

1. ASK GOOD QUESTIONS
Know the subject enough to ask right questions
Be willing to ask dumb questions
Know your audience (who are you asking)
Ask open-ended questions if you want a good answer
Use Specifics in your question
Use neutral wording (not leading)
Focus on 1 item at a time
Don't Interrupt
Restate their Answers

2. LISTEN
Must Stop Talking to learn
Don't anticipate their words
Don't start planning your reply while they're still talking
Actually FOCUS on what they're saying
Pay attention to Tone and Volume, Body Language
Remove Distractions
Empathize
Get rid of preconceived notions
Restate (make sure you understand)
Don't jump to conclusions

3.The Savior is our best example of how to communicate and handle Confrontations. Above all, we need to look to Him for our example.

Thanks to Brother Kinghorn for the great reminders and ideas!
